Coming Up This Week in LL38.....

     It was great to meet so many families at Open House last Thursday!  If you weren't able to make it to the Open House, I did post a video presentation that goes through the Powerpoint that I shared with families that night.
   
Writing Workshop
     We started to gather ideas as writers last week.  We told "Stories Around the Campfire" to inspire us as we gathered ideas for stories that are important to us.  The kids had so much fun using the flashlights as they told their stories.  The rest of the class worked on being good listeners.  In the end we found that when one student shared a story idea, it often sparked another memory for another student! 

     Last week your child also learned about the importance of decorating his/her writer's notebook.  This is due by this Tuesday!  Please see the earlier post with specific directions.

Math Workshop
     We are starting our first module in math this week.  The first module works with place value.  I will be sending home a Homework Helper packet so that you and your child can refer to it if you have questions on the nightly homework.

Reading Workshop
     We started to choose just right books for ourselves last week in reading workshop.  We also celebrated picture books in our classroom.  It was fun to read our favorite picture books.  The kids got to share their book and read it with a partner.
     During reading we also talked about what it looks like to be a good listener.  It is something that the kids certainly needed to practice.  We will continue to practice good listening strategies in the upcoming days and weeks.  We have talked about how good listeners can then agree or disagree with someone's thinking or that they might be able to learn something new from a partner. 

Scholastic Book Club
     Book orders went out last week.  If you would like to order books for your child, please send the order back to school by this Wednesday.  You can also go online to order.  My teacher code is GXC4P.  All of the money that is spent helps me to earn Bonus Points.  I am able to use these Bonus Points to buy more books for the classroom!

Getting to Know Your Child Survey
     Thank you to the parents who have filled out the online survey to help me get to know your child.  If you haven't filled it out yet, it would be very helpful if you could do so by this Friday, September 16th.
