I hope everyone enjoyed the beautiful weekend weather! I can't believe we are nearing the end of May! Just a reminder that Wednesday is a 1/2 day and on Friday we have our Memorial Day Program at 9:30.
If the World Were a Village.....
We finished our math project for the book, If the World Were a Village. I have created an iMovie to go along with the work the class completed, small group sharing, and some reflection about this project. Ask your child what he/she learned from completing this math project. (Unfortunately, I wasn't able to include every child's reflection in this video, but tried to capture a few of the reflections.)
Last week we started to learn about the Richter Scale, which is how scientists measure earthquakes. Earlier in the week the class created a seismograph to see how they are used to record earthquakes. The class then looked at some data that showed the earthquakes that had happened recently all around the world.
Since we have become experts on earthquakes, the kids will be starting a project to help out the National Weather Service Organization build earthquake resistant buildings based on research.
The class was divided into engineering teams, have defined the problem, and have started to research the structures that other scientists have found to be helpful when creating buildings that can withstand earthquakes. We will then build replicas of the buildings we would suggest and see how they hold up under the pressures of an earthquake.
We are in need of a few materials for building the replicas. If you are able to donate one of the items below, please let me know by email. We will probably be staring our replicas by Thursday or Friday of this week. Thanks in advance for any help you can give us!
- toothpicks
- straws
- spaghetti
- mini marshmallows
- play-dough
- paper towel/toilet paper tubes
- plastic recyclables (milk containers, plastic containers)
- empty tissue boxes
Upcoming Field Trip
Your child will be coming home with a permission trip for our field trip to the Hudson Public Library and Wood Park. Please sign and return by next Wednesday, May 31st.
Fourth Grade T-Shirt
Your child will also be coming home with a slip asking for his/her T-shirt size for the t-shirts each fourth graders receives for the Time Capsule Closing Ceremony. Please send these back as soon as possible.
Have a great week!
