Homework Update Parent Letter- Coming Home on Monday

A letter will be coming home on Monday explaining a few of the changes that we will made to homework starting this week.  Please sign and return the bottom portion of the parent letter by Wednesday.

I have also attached the new Reading in the Edges page and the new Math at Home page so that you can see the changes on there as well.

Thank you so much for your support.

Dear Parents,
As we enter December, I am writing to let you know of a few changes to your child’s homework.  Your child will continue to have reading and math homework each day.   Both homework pages still need to be turned in on Friday.
The “Reading in the Edges” homework has changed slightly since the beginning of the school year.  I am continuing to ask that your child read for at least 20 minutes each day for homework.  I know that there are times when your child may not have time in the day to read for 20 minutes.  It is my hope that they can try to find at least a few minutes in the “edges” of their day to get some additional reading in even if it is in the car or while waiting for an appointment.
In addition to reading, I am going to have your child reflect on his/her book at the end of the week.  I am also asking that you sign the “Reading in the Edges” paper at the end of the week stating that your child did do the reading that they have marked down for the week.
In math, we are currently learning multiplication and division.  Although it is important to practice all math facts including addition and subtraction, at this time practicing multiplication facts is going to be extremely beneficial for your child.
If students aren't fluent in the multiplication facts, it really does slow down the amount of problems that they are able to complete.
For “Math At Home” your child is going to get 1 additional multiplication page that they need to complete as part of their homework for the week.  We have talked in class about ways to practice our multiplication facts.  These include writing down the facts, flash cards, having someone quiz us on our facts, or even working on Prodigy.
On the new Math at Home page, your child will need to write down how he/she practiced the multiplication facts.  The sheet that is attached to the Math At Home page need to be completed and turned in on Friday.    Each day there is a column for parent initials.  Please initial this stating that your child did practice the way that was stated.  Your child will probably have additional time during the week to complete other ways of studying the facts.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this letter.  I want to make sure all families understand the changes in homework going forward.  Please sign the bottom half of this sheet and return to school with your child by WEDNESDAY, December 3rd.  Thank you for your continued support.

Directions:  Our top priority right now is to become fluent in our multiplication facts.  Attached is a multiplication page that need to be completed and turned in with this page on Friday.  In addition to these pages, you can practice multiplication on x-tra math, use flash cards, write the facts down, have someone “quiz” you, or practice on Prodigy.

Reading “IN THE EDGES”

Reading in the Edges- Reflection:  At the end of the week you need to reflect on your reading for the week.  You should keep “notes” about your book on sticky notes or on a separate piece of paper so that you can answer one of the questions below.  You might want to think about which question you will answer at the end of the week so that you can focus on that while reading this week.

For your reflection you couldDescribe your favorite part of the book?  What can you infer about one of your characters?  What is the message or theme in this book?   Don’t forget to use punctuation, capitals, and indent your paragraph.  You need to turn in thoughtful 4th grade work.
