Reading Celebration…
After
receiving all of the February Vacation Reading Challenge papers, I am pleased
to announce that 16 kids read a total of 5,524 minutes!! Congratulations to all of the readers! J
Coming Up This Week…
Read Across America Day
Tomorrow
is Read Across America Day in celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday! We will be having a guest reader in to read
to our class. It will be a great start
to the week!
Reading Workshop
In
Reader’s Workshop we are working on comparing and contrasting nonfiction topics
this week. We are looking for ways that two topics are similar and different
based on evidence from the text. The
kids have gotten really good at finding evidence that shows exactly what they
want to say. We will also be comparing
and contrasting two different points of view.
For example we could look at reasons for wearing school uniforms and
reasons against it.
Writing Workshop
In
Writer’s Workshop we spent last week taking a closer look at writing personal
essays based on a prompt. The kids got
to write about what they would like to learn to do. We have many eager learners in our
classroom. Their interests included learning
how to be a photographer, a cook, a babysitter, a better football and
basketball player, a gymnast, learning how to snowboard, and how to be a
chemist! These are just to name a
few! It was great to see all of these
interests coming out in their writing. They
got to use all of their expertise from earlier in the year to write this
essay. They also got to add to their
learning by thinking about the importance of adding mini stories into their
essay.
This
week we will be taking another look at writing realistic fictional narratives.
We will get to review all that we already know about writing in this genre
and be able to add to our learning as well.
Math Workshop
In
math we are continuing to work on fractions.
Last week we spent a lot of time on finding equivalent fractions. We
used a lot of visuals to demonstrate how two fractions could be
equivalent. By the end of the week we
started to notice a pattern or rule that could be applied to finding equivalent
fractions without a visual. We will
continue to work on this rule this week as well.
This Week’s Good Evening Math….
Attaching the Good Evening Math
last week seemed to be helpful if a student forgot their paper at school.
Here is this week’s Good Evening Math:

This Week’s Reading in the Edge
Question….
Compare
the main character in your book to YOU!
What do you have in common with the character? What makes you different from the character
in your book? Use one of the ways that
you have been taking notes in class to show your thinking this week. (We have been using a Venn Diagram or a
T-Chart)
I have
chosen one way to show my thinking.
I have
written down at least 4 similarities that I have to my character.
I have
written down at least 4 differences that I have compared to my character. (Make sure you have a difference on both
sides.)
I have
used some evidence from the text to support my ideas.
I have
edited my answer with one LENS
(capitals, punctuation, spelling)-circle
one
Just a reminder...
We have a half day of school this Wednesday, March 4th!
I hope everyone has a great week!
