Math Workshop

We are working on our last Module in math this week.  We will be working on measurement and conversions as well as some review work. To start off the unit, we went outside last week and measured some of the equipment on the playground.  Partners used either a ruler or a yardstick to complete the activity.  This week we will take our measurements and work on converting to inches, feet, and yards.

Writing Focus...Process not Product

The research project that we are working on for the Regions of the United States is a project that requires students to apply what they have learned about writing fictional narratives and essays.  Even though half of this project is to apply their learning, the other half of the project is new learning.

Students have the task of choosing their topics, reading nonfiction texts, determining what is important for their research, taking notes in their own words about the important facts, and then writing their research report.  Phew!!  It is a lot to learn!

Since this is the first time that students are doing this kind of research, we are really focusing on the process that students are going through rather than solely focusing on the final product.  Of course we want the final product to have been revised and edited, but the amount of work that goes into their paper “behind the scenes” is really important in fourth grade.

Research Update

Thank you for your support at home last week while your child was finishing Chapters 1 and 2 of their research.  The kids are continuing to work on completing Chapter 3 of their research for their region.  This week we will start the final chapter, which will be an essay.

Last week the researchers were working on creating a fictional narrative based on one of the topics that they researched.  The kids needed to think about what they know about writing fictional narratives, but they also had to think about how they were going to “weave” in the facts that they have learned through their research.  This is certainly a challenging task!  The kids found out that planning out their story before typing was really helpful.

Just like last week, your child will be responsible for finishing Chapter 3 of their research at home this week.  Each afternoon your child will come home with a slip that explains their “goal” for writing that night.  Please sign the slip so that I know you were aware of your child’s responsibility that night for homework.  Your child will need to return the slip the next day.

Sample homework slip….

Dear Parents,

We are working on our research in school, however, it requires a lot of time to type in Google Docs.    At the end of each writing block, we are creating a goal for ourselves.  This goal is what we would like to accomplish at home, so that we can continue making progress with our research.  Tonight my goal is  _____________.

Research at Home

I hope everyone enjoyed the long holiday weekend!  I am sending home the letter below with your child today.  I wanted to post it  on the blog in case it didn't make it home.  :)

Research Homework

Dear Parents,
Your child has been working very hard on their Region research project in school.  We are starting to learn about writing another genre for our research this week.  Over the past few weeks your child has been writing the first two “chapters” of their research.  For homework this week, your child needs to finish writing Chapters 1 and 2 in Google Docs.  Everyone should know how to sign in as we have done this many times in school.  If your child is finished with the writing, he/she needs to go back and edit these two chapters.  The finished product for Chapters 1 and 2 is due on Thursday, May 28thYour child does not need to print this at home.  We will print them at school when the entire research project is complete!
Thank you for your help with this!

~Mrs. Lewis

Just a reminder that tomorrow, Wednesday, May 27th is a half day!

Have a great week!

This week in LL38

Happy Mother’s Day!  I hope everyone had a great day.

Region Experts

Last week we started our Research unit.  The kids were assigned a region of the United States.  We have 3 regions that we have learned about as a class this year.  Students will become EXPERTS on one of the remaining regions.  Throughout our research unit, the kids will need to use what they have learned throughout 4th grade and apply it to their reading to find important facts and take notes.  They will also get to apply what they have learned in writing to teach the important facts.
As they begin to write their research paper, they will be creating a nonfiction book, a fictional narrative story about an event that occurred in their region, and an essay that convinces readers about an important topic to his region.  It is fun to see how much progress kids make as they start to apply writing strategies that they learned earlier in the year.
In June we will be holding a United States Region Fair.  More information about the day and time will be sent home in the next few weeks.

Creating Earthquake Proof Buildings

In science we read a lot about how engineers build structures to withstand an earthquake. We had read specific things that engineers do to create these buildings.  One example is to create a structure that was triangular and had a wider base.
The kids were very excited to create their own structures using the materials they were given.  When the kids worked in teams to create their own structures many of them used what they learned from the text to create buildings that are similar to those created in the real world!
Here are some pictures of our earthquake proof buildings….

Ecotarium

Last week your child should have come home with a permission slip for our field trip to the Ecotarium on May 22nd.  Please send the permission slip and $12.00 back to school with your child by Tuesday.  If you would like to chaperone, please let me know by Tuesday as well.  J

Math MCAS

Just a reminder that Math MCAS will take place this Friday, May 15th and next Wednesday, May 20th.  Testing begins right away, so please make sure your child arrives to school on time!

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Today your child came home with a permission slip for our field trip to the Ecotarium in Worcester.  I told the kids that the permission slip needs to be sent back by Tuesday, May 12th.
If you would like to chaperone, please email me by next Tuesday as well.  If there are a lot of parents that would like to volunteer, I will pick names at random.  I will let you know by next Wednesday or Thursday if your name was chosen to volunteer.

This week in 4th Grade...

Math Workshop Update

Last week in math we started our unit on decimals.  We have talked about the connection between decimals and fractions.  Making this connection helps the kids understand that they are not learning something completely new.  Last week we started with tenths. By the end of the week the kids were able to write the decimal form and the fraction form in tenths.   They also have an understanding of how many more tenths would make a whole when looking at a picture.  For example in the picture for 0.3, it would take 0.7 more tenths to make one whole.

Book Clubs

Before vacation we introduced several books for the upcoming Book Clubs that would be taking place during RTI.  We watched book trailers on each of the book choices.  After listening to the trailers, the kids were able to make a decision about the book that they were most interested in.
Book Club groups were created based on student interest.  On the Friday before vacation, groups met and created a calendar for when they would meet as a group and for what they would read before their first meeting.

Last week we had our first Book Club meetings.  It was really fun to see so much enthusiasm around the books.  It was clear through the discussions that the kids were really thinking about their books and determining what they thought would make for a good discussion.

Our goal over the next few weeks with these Book Club books is to be responsible for our reading and come to our Book Club meetings prepared.  We are also working on jotting down some "talk-worthy" questions or thoughts around the reading.  We have talked about how having these thoughts will make the discussion much more interesting.

* Book Club books can be read for Reading in the Edges homework!! *

Earthquake Experts

Thanks to all of the parents that sent in materials for our Earthquake unit in science!

Last week we continued to read about earthquakes and how scientists measure them.   As readers we talked about how we could best organize the information that we were learning about earthquakes.  We used a Facts, Questions, Response (FQR) chart to record our information.   It helped us to organize our new learning and think about we were still wondering about earthquakes and how they are measured.

After learning about the seismograph, we got a chance to create one.  Then we braced ourselves for the LL38 Earthquakes.  The seismograph recorded the magnitude of the earthquakes that took place.

Here are some pictures of the kids using the seismographs that they created!

This week we will learn how architects construct buildings so that they can withstand an earthquake.  The kids will get a chance to create their own buildings and see how they stand up to an earthquake.

I hope everyone has a great week!
