Summer Reading Blog

Summer Reading Blog....

This summer your child can participate in our Paper Shredder Summer Reading Blog!  I have included the web address below.  This website will be a place for the class to tell other kids about what they have been reading throughout  summer.  I will be "moderating" the website, so all comments will have to be approved and then they will appear on the website.

Hopefully this will be a fun way to continue the reading conversations that were happening in the classroom during the school year!

Happy Summer!

Getting Ready for Success Day!

          Success Day!

We have a busy week ahead of us!  The kids are getting ready to show off all of their hard work and learning about the Regions of the United States!  They are very excited to share all of this with you during the fourth grade Success Day on Wednesday at 1:00!

Fly-Up Day to Quinn

On Wednesday we will also be going to Quinn Middle School in the morning.  The kids will get a tour of the building and will get to hear about Quinn from some of the students. We will be going for a few hours, and we will be ready for our Success Day in the afternoon.

     Time Capsules

We are almost ready to put the finishing touches on our times capsules.  The kids need to bring their time capsules to school on Thursday.  (It would be helpful if they hold off until Thursday so that we have space in the classroom to set up for Success Day.) Later this week, we will add a few special items that I have been holding onto throughout the year into the time capsules.  The kids will be ready to share all of their time capsules with you at the Time Capsule Closing Ceremony on the last day of school, Tuesday, June 23rd at 9:00!
I have gotten some questions about the Time Capsule Closing Ceremony.  This ceremony is a moving on ceremony from elementary school to middle school.  All of the fourth grade classes will be involved in the ceremony at 9:00 on the last day of school.

Farley Fun Day

Farley Fun Day will be held on Thursday (rain date is Friday).  Our class will be going to field day in the morning.  There are some water activities, so you might want to have your child bring a change of clothes that day.

I can't believe we only have a little over a week left of the school year!  The excitement is certainly building in the classroom!  I am looking forward to seeing everyone on Wednesday at our Success Day!

LL38's Olympic Games

I reminded the kids this afternoon that we will be holding our Olympic Games tomorrow.  Since we will be using water balloons, I suggested that they bring a change of clothes.

Library Field Trip…
Just a reminder that we will be walking to the Hudson Public Library and Wood Park on Wednesday.
Please make sure your child has proper footwear, a bagged lunch, and a water bottle.  (Lunches will be transported by car to Wood Park, so your child won’t need to carry their lunch in a backpack.)   Also, please apply sunscreen and bug spray at home.
If you have any questions, please let me know!

Summer Reading
Last week we started to talk about the importance of summer reading.   You child will be coming home with a Summer Reading folder that has resources that can be used when school is out.  I am also posting these resources on my blog so that you are aware of them.
To start off our summer reading discussions we looked at the graph below.  It is a really powerful way of showing kids why it is so important to read during the summer.  Ask your child what they learned from looking at the graph!

To Be Read Lists….
We also learned that there are a lot of great websites to go to when we aren’t sure what to read.  The kids started to create a “To Be Read” list last week.
Here are some of the websites that were helpful in creating these lists….
·       Click KIDS
·       Click BOOKS and AUTHORS

Other types of reading…
Reading blogs written by other kids is another way for your child to get their “daily” reading in.  Here are a few blog websites:
·       Sports Illustrated for Kids-click: BLOGS

Summer Reading for Quinn…
This week we will be looking at the books choices that Quinn Middle School is providing for students.  Each student will need to choose one of the books from the list to read over the summer.  They will be recording their thinking and will be placed in a Book Club at the beginning of 5th grade to discuss the book with other students that also read the book.
We will be watching book trailers and browsing the books during our field trip to the Hudson Public Library.  Students will be encouraged to check out a book during our library visit (possibly one of the books from the Quinn list).  Each student will make their choice in school by the end of the week.

Book Orders….
If you are planning on ordering any books from the Scholastic Book Club, please order by Tuesday.  I want to make sure that we get the books before the last day of school.

Success Day!

Next Wednesday, June 17th is fourth grade Success Day.  It will be held at 1:00.  Last week I sent home the dismissal slip for Success Day.  If you are planning on dismissing your child before the end of the school day on the 17th please send the slip back with your child by this Friday.

It certainly is a busy time of year!  I can't believe we only have a few weeks left of the school year.  I hope everyone has a great week!

As you know, on Wednesday we will be walking to the Hudson Public Library and Wood Park.  If you are interested in chaperoning our field trip, please let me know as soon as possible.  We will leave around 9:00 and be back mid afternoon.  It should be a fun day!

End of the Year Book Orders

Today your child will be coming home with several book orders.  The following note will be attached to help you in choosing books for the summer. These are just a few of the great books offered by Scholastic Book Clubs.

June 2015
Dear Parents,

Attached you will find copies of the last Scholastic Book Club orders.  These magazines are filled with many great books that we've talked about in class all year and would be great for summer reading (and Scholastic books tend to be cheaper than the bookstore!).  If you'd like to buy some of these books you can either go online or send in cash/check.  The online code is GXC4P.  These orders are due by June 9th, to ensure that books come in before the end of the year.  As I already said, there are many great books in these magazines.  I've tried to highlight some of the great books below:
J  Lucky- June:  Flora and Ulysses by Kate DiCamillo
J  Summer Reading- May:  Game Changers by Mike Lupica
J  Summer Reading- May:  Holes by Louis Sachar
J  Summer Reading-May:  The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate
J  Summer Reading-May:  Zane and the Hurricane by Rodman Philbrick
J  Summer Reading-May:  10 True Tales by Allan Zullo
J  Summer Reading-May:  National Geographic Kids:  Everything Volcanoes and Earthquakes

I hope this helps.  Happy reading!

Mrs. Lewis
